3 Keys for Staying Motivated Towards Your Goals

On its own, motivation toward our goals and dreams is not enough. To maintain momentum, our motivation needs a foundation built on a determined will to succeed. Our motivation is the spark of energy that sets us toward a given goal, but it is our inner resiliency and commitment that keeps us fired up. We are largely governed by our emotions. The negative feelings we have when things aren’t going our way is what makes it so easy to lose focus. Our emotions inevitably fluctuate, so we need to understand that our motivations will follow that same vibration. Perhaps it is not motivation we should be so concerned with. Instead, we should utilize all our inner resources of mental and emotional grit as a means of bypassing the ebb and flow of our motivation.

Commitment, purpose, and sheer devotion toward our aspirations are what enable us to endure every challenge and steep mountain hike that may hinder our path forward. Here are 3 keys to help you stay motivated!

“Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory” - George S. Patton

1. Laser-like focus

A laser-like vision of our ambition and goals shines clarity and focus in our minds. Too often we lose our motivation when everything just starts feeling way too hard, in that instance, our thoughts and fears begin to permeate our higher ambitions. When we can teach ourselves to be confident and wise, we can counteract those times of cluttered thinking with a reflective mind set. We’ll always have fears and challenges to overcome; we need them to keep catapulting us forward past our own mental and emotional barriers. Envision your goals clearly and keep track of them. Most importantly, stay focused on the mission at hand, no matter the circumstance. Never stow your dreams aside.

“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence” – Confucius

2. Develop your inner grit

Our inner grit is what inspires us to never give up. It is a ‘no matter what’ way of thinking, being, and executing. We shouldn’t fear being stubbornly ambitious. It is only through that sheer level of devotion and commitment that we will keep taking the all important action toward what we aim for. Embrace all your tough times, mistakes, and failures as learning curves. The muscle of our inner grit is something that we develop and cultivate by not giving in and by maintaining a level-headed yet passionate approach to our goals. Inner grit is the backbone of our motivation; it is the powered engine that keeps us running toward, and not away from what we desire.

“When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

3. Anything is possible

When we think small, we act small. When we think bigger, we naturally expand and stretch out our thoughts to the wide promise of possibility. Our motivation fades when we feel our dreams are too lofty or too great to make real. If our dreams and goals seem so impossible, it’s actually a good thing. It means you are extending yourself past your own self-created boundaries. What our goals and desires need is our inherent belief in them and in ourselves, and devoted action. Seek inspiration from all you have around you, find ways to open out your thinking, and never doubt your capacity for change and achieving your ambitions. When we transform our thinking to a mentality of potential and limitlessness this becomes what we see more of and invite into our space.

“It always seems impossible until it's done” - Nelson Mandela

That light of motivation from within is a call from your heart to act and begin. When we add the power of our courage, determination, and passion we can take large leaps forward, even through seemingly smaller steps. Don’t allow dark days to dim your motivation. Stay aligned and on track by having an unquestionable belief in yourself.
