5 Ways to Process Negative Emotions and Circumstances

Happiness is a choice, you can choose to be happy, or choose to let negative emotions take charge. Letting your emotions take charge can happen when you have too much pride, have fear, self-doubt, or question self-worth. Of course, you can receive happiness in terms of receiving a new car, getting a raise, or getting new shoes is great, but that's only temporary happiness. Finding ways to achieve permanent happiness creates for a healthier and happier life in the long term. Below are some of the personal ways that you can try to attain happiness.

1.  Unload Negative Emotions

Dealing with our emotions is a tough task, especially if we’re experiencing sadness, stress, or negative thoughts. Quite often we’ll ignore our emotions and pretend like nothing is happening, and perhaps engage in an unhealthy vice to supress the sadness. We may think that those emotions we faced are gone, but they are just buried deeper  and will re-surface in the future. We must unload negative emotions means to acknowledge and attend to them, this will ultimately make us feel better. The key is to always ask yourself why you're feeling particularly sad or angry.

2.  Act on the Root of the Problem

Once you discover what the root problem is, you must actively look for a healthy solution that will give you peace of mind. You can do this by changing your thought process, living in the moment, or improving/letting go of relationships. Depending on the problem, sometimes there's only so much you can do to change the outcome. While that sounds disheartening, it doesn't have to be. Being able to accept your limited control of the outcome of a situation gives you enough power to move on and focus on a happier future.

3. Positivity vs. Negativity

You can lead a happy life by thinking optimistically. If you work hard enough, you can always take some positives out of a negative circumstance. Always taking away the negative things from a given situation will only make you feel more and more depressed.  For example, if you failed a job interview, you could view it as a massive failure that sets back your career, or you could use it as an opportunity to grow, learn, and land an even better job in the future. Each problem has opportunities and lessons to gain, so it’s up to you to discover the positives in the things in your life that appear negative.

4. Intentions vs. Expectations

If you have the expectation that things should always be perfect with your job, relationships, or family, you'll only become more stressed. To live a happier life, you can’t focus on being perfect or trying to make others perfect. Focus on your intentions, and the goals you want to achieve. When you realize that there's more than one way to achieve your goals or attain happiness, you give yourself a lot more freedom, and process negativity much better.

5. Think about the Future

Thinking about the future can be incredibly daunting. The reason the future can be so scary is because we constantly look back on our past mistakes and worry about what we'll do wrong. This stems the negative thinking that makes us feel inadequate about things that haven't even happened yet. We have to realize that we can't change the past, but we can learn from it and create a better future for ourselves. Not everything can go your way in life, making the effort to attain an ultimate happiness can be enough to be grateful for what you have, and not have any regrets. A crucial part of happy life is accepting the fact that things aren't always going to go the way you planned, but you can still love your life for it what is, and accept yourself for who you are.
