8 Motivational Quotes From The Star Wars Film Saga

In celebration of the release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, it seems the perfect opportunity to use the Force to give you some motivation for the New Year. That being said, here are eight quotes from the previous six films (yes, we’re including the terrible prequels George Lucas put us through) for you to carry into the New Year.

1. “The Force will be with you….always.” – Obi Wan Kenobi

No quotes list from Star Wars would be complete without this one. While the Force may simply be another imaginary religion of sorts outside of the films, you can still use it as a motivational placebo. Whenever you are about to step up and need a little bit of a push, just imagine Obi-Wan Kenobi telling you that the Force is with you, and if you can get over the fact that you’re hearing voices in your head, you should be great!

2. “Do, or do not. There is no try.” – Master Yoda

Aside from being classic Yoda, this is a great motivational quote that is easily applied to almost every situation imaginable. Want to try to lose 10 pounds? Try not, do! Want to get a promotion at work? Try not! Do, or do not! Want to open your own business? Try not, do! See what I mean? It’s the perfect push to get you going, mainly because it simplifies everything so well. Just do it, there’s nothing to it.

3. “Keep your concentration here and now, where it belongs.” – Qui Gon Gin

Another good tip. It doesn’t help to distract yourself with thoughts of upcoming tasks, obligations, and other stressful situations at the expense of what you have to do right now. When you have a goal or an obligation to fulfill, see it through to the end and give it your undivided attention. This will help you accomplish your task quickly and thoroughly, reassuring you of your abilities and giving you some clear headspace with which to accomplish your remaining goals.

4. “Always in motion is the future.” – Master Yoda

Basically this means that your future hasn’t been written yet, so you can use today to make whatever kind of future you want. All you have to do is take the first step. Determine what your life goals are, and make a plan on how to achieve those goals. If you stick to your plan and work hard everyday, you will reach success and be living the future you always wanted.

5. “In my experience there is no such thing as luck.” – Obi Wan Kenobi

I wouldn’t say that’s entirely true: the universe tends to work in mysterious ways. But it is true that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. To Kenobi’s point, though, luck will not just come knocking on your door one day because you are sitting around waiting for it. You have to make something of yourself in life, not rely on the blessings or shortcomings of others to get ahead. If you go out and give everyday your best effort, good things will happen, and if you don’t, well then nothing will happen.

6. “Your focus determines your reality.” – Qui Gon Gin

Qui Gon Gin was apparently secretly a hippie Jedi, really big into ‘living in the moment’. That, however, does not discredit his Jedi wisdom, anymore than Yoda’s height determines his. To his point, if you want to make a certain reality for yourself, then you must focus in order to achieve that reality. If that reality is being a doctor, focus your attention on medical school; if you want to be a musician or artist, focus on mastering your craft; if you want to be president of the United States, well nowadays I guess you just have to insult everybody (that’s a Trump joke). You get the point.

7. “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” – Master Yoda

Keep your emotions in check. Don’t be afraid of accomplishing your goals, or of setting out to accomplish them. You must also try not to become frustrated when you fail, which you will do. Everyone that has ever set out to accomplish something has failed time and time again before achieving success, and you will too. If you beat yourself up too much over your failures, you will never achieve the lifestyle or future that you wish for yourself. Pick yourself up and keep your eye on the end goal, and then persevere until your goal is accomplished.

8. “If you choose the quick, and easy path, as Vader did, you will become an agent of evil.” – Master Yoda

Don’t take any shortcuts. Anything that is worth having in life takes time and patience to acquire. Taking shortcuts and trying to cheat your way to achieving your goals will only do you a disservice in the end. You will find yourself unprepared to handle your newfound ‘accomplishment’ and all of the obligations that come with it. Remember there is no reward without risk, and vice versa, so take your time, learn what you need to learn, and do what you have to do (within the confines of the law and morality), and success will be in your future.
