9 Songs To Get You Through Your Run

Forcing yourself to go out and exercise never seems like an easy task, especially if you have to run outside in unfriendly weather conditions. Having a good music playlist with you, however, can make all the difference when it comes to willing yourself to reach the end of your run. Obviously everybody has different tastes when it comes to music, but when it comes to running or exercising, everybody wants a great set of motivational tunes to help them forget the aches, pains, and exhaustion of your run. Try listening to these nine pump-up songs the next time you go for your morning or afternoon jog.

1. Gonna Fly Now – Rocky Theme

What better way to make it up the steps of City Hall than by listening to the theme from Rocky? I’m not talking about Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger, which is also a great song to run to, but rather the trumpet-blaring Gonna Fly Now, composed by Bill Conti, which is always played over the exercise montage in the Rocky films. It has a great tempo, and you can imagine you are the underdog chosen to represent your city against all odds while you hear it as you run along.

2. Runnin’ On Empty – Jackson Browne

Director Robert Zemeckis flawlessly chose Jackson Browne’s Runnin’ On Empty to chronicle Forrest Gump’s epic three-year run across the United States. With a great tempo, melody, and great lyrics to run to (“Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels”), this one is great for an outdoor run down a park path or through the neighborhood.

3. Let’s Get It Started – Black Eyed Peas

The Black Eyed Peas’ Let’s Get It Started is another great running motivator, if for no other reason than its funky beat and subliminal “and runnin,’ runnin,’” lyrical undertone.

4. Rock and Roll – Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin’s up-tempo rocker is an encouraging mash of distorted guitar riff meets heavy brass symbols. Combined with Robert Plant’s echoing high-pitched voice, Rock and Roll is guaranteed to make you want to run every time you hear it.

5. Start Me Up – The Rolling Stones

Start Me Up ushered The Rolling Stones into a new era of pop-rock music in 1981, with new guitar sounds that still resembled the feel of the band’s earlier hits. The lyrics and tempo are both great for encouraging you as you run: “If you start me up I’ll never stop!”

6. Runnin’ Down A Dream – Tom Petty

Another great song for your running routine! Just imagine the dream is your distance or weight goal, and you’re on the endless quest to chase that dream that never will come to you.

7. Gimme All Your Lovin’ – ZZ Top

Anything by ZZ Top is great to run to. Their hard-rock style, coupled with their harmonious, but rock-worthy vocals are enough to get you through any run. Just “don’t let up until you’re through!”

8. Don’t Stop Believing – Journey

Admittedly this one takes a couple of versus to really get into, but the rhythm piano is a great pace setter for you to set while you run. The lyrics also couldn’t be more fitting for encouragement; just “don’t stop believing,” and you’ll be sure to reach the end.

9. Rockin’ In The Free World – Neil Young

Easily one of Neil Young’s best rockers, Free World is a high-distortion guitar anthem to modern society, politics, and the class system, basically telling them all to go stick it where the sun don’t shine. Its overwhelmingly simple structure takes nothing away from its ability to drive you to keep going based on nothing but loud music and utter contempt for the Man.
