Burn Those Ships (or Clothes) for Extra Motivation

This New Year's Eve, you really committed to your resolution to lose body fat…and it’s working!

Clothes are not fitting any more. The belt needs new holes punched into it. Your non-pleated pants have inadvertent pleats from tightening up the belt just to keep your pants from falling.

You have exceeded your short-term goal of losing a few pounds and now are well on your way towards your “reach” goal. None of your clothes fit. Which is a good thing, but what do you do?

First, you need to truly commit to this new lifestyle. How do you do this?

As legend has it, when he reached the New World, Cortez burned his ships. As a result, his crew was well motivated. They had no choice but to succeed because retreat was not an option.

What do I mean by this?

Since none of your clothes fit, get rid of them. Donate them, sell them, whatever you need to do to get rid of them, do it. “Burn those ships” to ensure you cannot gain that fat back.

I know of too many clients who have different sets of clothes: their fat clothes, moderate clothes, and skinny clothes. They are subconsciously communicating to themselves that they do not believe they will stay with the new behavior, by keeping the “fat” clothes as a backup plan. I have noticed a trend. The clients who keep the “fat” clothes are more likely to put the fat back on. The clients who get rid of the “fat” clothes, are more likely to keep the fat off for years and years to come.

Second, purchase only “transitional” clothes. Celebrate the win but invest in only the bare minimum. What do I mean by this? Since we are not at our final destination, only purchase the bare necessities for clothes: 1-2 pairs of pants, 2-3 shirts, etc. As you keep progressing, you will get rid of these close as well. Keep the faith that you are still on a journey to your final destination and will not be at your current weight for long.

It is not until you hit your final destination, that you will invest into your new clothes that truly match your new healthy lifestyle.

What are you to do?

As the fat melts off your body and your clothes no longer fit, get rid of them! Keep yourself motivated and committed towards your healthier lifestyle by holding yourself accountable to ensure you don’t falter.
