You may be reading this, thinking "I can never go without my bacon!" and you will not be alone. Many people think that they would not be able to survive if they didn't have their meat and cheese, but it does not have to be this way. Meat is often expensive even being some of the highest priced items on your grocery list. So what are some simple replacements that you can do to save a few bucks on your monthly grocery bill?

Stick With The Basics

Switching beef and other meats for beans, adding more rice and whole grains, and focusing on cheap whole foods is an excellent idea. Beans and grains are the cheapest items on your grocery list, and adding a fair amount of delicious plant-based protein into your diet is an excellent way to shave off the top of the monthly grocery bill. 

In order to do this, it is best to stick with the parameter of the store. While foods like rice and beans are often found in the aisles, so are junk foods and other foods that are highly expensive and unnecessary. 

Consider a study that was published in 2015 in the Journal of Hunger and Environmental Nutrition showed that compared to a government-sponsored healthy diet, a plant-based diet which included olive oil costs 39$ over 7 days USD compared to 53$ USD for the government-sponsored diet.

Save Money In The Future

Plant-based diets are not only great at saving money but according to the American Dietetic Association, they can even lower your risk of various medical diseases, including cancer. With healthcare spending being as high as 3.2 trillion dollars a year in the US alone, any reduction is not only good for our wallets long-term, but also for the nation as a whole. Imagine how you would feel by saving a decent chunk of money over the rest of your life by cutting your doctors visits down. 

Isn't It Hard?

Not even close. Just switching out beef stew for veggie stew, or changing out a glass of milk for a blended almond milk banana smoothie is very easy to do. You don't have to eliminate all meat in your diet, but lowering the amount should show a net benefit to your wallet at the end of the month! So just make a few simple adjustments to your diet, and rake in the savings that you can put towards other things, such as a savings account, or a new house, just by lowering meat consumption.
