How Fish Oil Boosts Athletic Performance

WebMD proudly states fish oil can benefits people's health with lowering their cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting blood sugar, as well as preventing blood clots and lowering blood pressure. While general health is a tremendous benefit from fish oils, could something so simple as taking a fish oil (Omega 3 Fatty Acid) be beneficial to your athletic performance? That's exactly what researchers from the University of Valencia, Spain were asking when they performed a double-blind study.

What did they find out?

What they found out was quite exciting. Supplementing with significantly large doses of fish oil WILL significantly improve your reaction time and complex reaction efficiency.

Here is what the researchers did. They gave half of the elite female soccer players 3.5 grams (3,500mg) a day of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) fish oil and other half received 3.5g of an olive oil placebo. The subjects had to press different buttons and pedals with left and right hands and feet, or stop responding, according to visual and auditory stimuli. The results after 4 weeks found the players taking fish oil significantly improved their accuracy and efficiency. The same fish oil athletes also saw significant improvements in perceptual motor performance as well as reaction time and decision making vs. the placebo olive oil group.

What are you to do?

Increase the amount of fish oil (Omega 3 Fatty Acid) you take every day. One gelcap (240mg of DHA) will not have the significant improvement you are looking for but taking the dosage the elite athletes took 15 gel caps of fish oils (3.5 grams or 3,500mg). Not only does fish oil help your health, but it will improve your athletic performance. If elite athletes saw significant improvement in accuracy, efficiency, reaction time, and decision making, you will see the same benefit.
