For those of you that have been in the workforce for an extended amount of time, then you can recall the days of only having the option to meet face to face for work meetings. These meetings could only be held when everyone was in attendance at work. Now, with the advent of technology, face to face meetings have become a thing of the past.

The virtual team concept is one that has given rise in the business market today. By meeting virtually, there are no limits or barriers as to the place or time that meetings can occur. Newer technology such as video conferencing with applications such as Skype and FaceTime, make it easy to meet virtually. But just how can virtual teams perform at a high rate and be successful? Let's take a look at a few habits that successful virtual teams have implemented.

Act like you are in the Office 

In the past, the traditional method of meeting face to face typically held the same format. To begin the meeting, there would be an agenda given to inform all of the meeting topics. For extended meetings, breaks for coffee and to use the restroom were implemented. One of the habits of successful virtual teams is to treat the meetings as if everyone were meeting face to face.

For example, the person leading the virtual team meeting should email the meeting agenda to each team member. Similar to a face to face meeting, the agenda will list the items to be discussed in the meeting. There should also be attendance taken during these meeting. For those that are late to a virtual team meeting, they should incur the same penalties, if any, that would have been received in a face to face meeting. Lastly, the meetings should also have breaks provided for the virtual teams as well. 

Build Trust by Assigning Duties

With virtual teams, trust could be a major factor in regards to how successful the team may be. To help the team members earn trust within each other, the team leader should assign duties to every member. By assigning duties, each member will be held accountable for their own actions. By doing so, team members are forced to trust each other because they all have a part to complete, which is a component of a bigger whole.

For example, assume that you are currently working on a project to design an airplane. You have been assigned to design the wings of the plane. For the entire project to be a success, you must also have trust in your team members to successfully complete their respective portions in order to design the entire plane. Trust is a vital element for success of a virtual team.


As workers are empowered and regarded as essential parts of the association, they increase confidence in their capabilities to emphatically impact their companies. The same goes for those working in the virtual team concept. Workers with sound levels of fearlessness and confidence are all the more ready to relay information to others. They feel good trading thoughts and working together with others in a fair and open way. These practices advance collaboration and dynamic contribution in support of virtual team objectives that couldn't be accomplished with an incoherent, non-connected workforce.
