What Protein Powder Can I Consume Besides Whey?

Whey protein is the best protein powder on the market, but people who are lactose intolerant may not be able to consume it. You may also fit into my category. I enjoy the taste of Whey Protein, but I don’t like the effects it has on my stomach. This is what made me search for an alternative over the years. Here’s what I found.

What's the Alternative?

Pea protein. Most pea protein powders are around 98 percent digestible. What this means is your body will utilize 98% of the protein in the powder. 98 percent is an excellent number in terms of supplements.

What is Pea Protein Powder?

Pea protein powder is made by extracting the soluble pea protein from yellow-split peas. It is not the same as ground peas as most of the starch and fiber is removed.  It is dairy free, gluten free, and soy free.

Building and repairing muscle

healthline.com explains:

Pea protein contains all nine essential amino acids that your body cannot create and must get from food.

It’s also a great source of branched-chain amino acids, especially arginine — which promotes healthy blood flow and heart health — and leucine, isoleucine and valine — which promote muscle growth.

A 2011 Canadian study reported that pea protein lowers high blood pressure.  While using rats in the study, they found a significant drop in blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic) in just 8 weeks! Pea protein will also help you lower your inflammation in your body.

Improve Kidney Health

The University of Manitoba found that consuming pea protein helped delay or prevent kidney damage in subjects with high blood pressure.

The American Heart Association explains the link of high blood pressure and damaged kidneys:

This is why high blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) is the second leading cause of kidney failure. Over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause arteries around the kidneys to narrow, weaken or harden. These damaged arteries are not able to deliver enough blood to the kidney tissue.

The researchers noticed that by stabilizing blood pressure levels and increased urine function, the subjects with kidney disease were able to live longer. An interesting conclusion found in the study showed the subjects who consumed yellow peas alone did not see the same benefits. The subjects that consumed the pea protein powder saw their kidney health improve.

What Should You Do?

Invest in pea protein powders. It has a high absorption rate, builds and rebuilds muscles, and can assist you with heart and kidney health. If you consume whey protein powder on a regular basis, use pea protein in as an alternate, every other day. Not only will your muscles appreciate it, your health will improve for the better!
