Where Do You Lose Fat First?

You’ve invested into your health this year. You changed your diet, started exercising, and even started taking the stairs instead of the elevator. You are really committed this time, but your waistline is not shrinking. Many friends and coworkers have commented that your face looks thinner. Why are you losing fat in your face and not your waist? Is this okay? Do you need to change something? The answer is no. Your face is the first place your body begins to lose fat.

To paraphrase Charles Poliquin, world renown personal trainer:

When someone starts losing fat, they will lose it in their face first. Not their belly, arms, or legs but their face. Why? Storing fat is all about storage for energy. As humans, we are most efficient at storing fat around our belly, waist, legs, and even triceps. Your face, however, is not efficient at storing energy. Because of this lack of efficiency, your body wants to lose fat first in your face.

Your goal may be to drop the inches around your waist but right now, it’s only happening at your face. Stay the course! You are on the brink of fat loss. Stick to it! After your face drops the excess fat, your body will start to drop body fat as well.

What are you to do?

If your friends and family have noticed your face is thinning out from your healthy lifestyle changes, stick to it. It’s the first step towards a larger goal of dropping those unwanted pounds. After a while, your body will then start dropping fat at those other “efficient” storage areas…which is what you wanted in the first place.
